The Science Museum of Virginia is the key museum strategic partner in the Phoebe’s Field project. It is the flagship institution for informal science education in the Commonwealth of Virginia. SMV was created in 1970 by the Virginia General Assembly in recognition of the pressing need to promote science education for all Virginians. Located in the historic Broad Street Station, the former headquarters of the RF&P Railroad Company, the Museum opened its doors to the public in 1977.

The Director of Science Education, Eugene Maurakis and Museum Scientist for Physical Sciences, David Hagan will bring their expertise with public interface and science content to every stage of the project as exhibit and science consultants. Dr. Maurakis has 12+ years experience at SMV, 30 years experience in applied and theoretical fields of biological and environmental sciences, and he directs the creation and implementation of the museum’s statewide science education programs and exhibitions. David Hagan has nearly 20 years experience at SMV and has been key to the development of numerous exhibits and science education projects within Virginia. He is also affiliate faculty in the Physics Department of Virginia Commonwealth University.

SMV has extensive experience with large scale and collaborative projects with institutions, including Virginia Tech, throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. SMV will be the host institution for the pilot study of Phoebe’s Field in 2010, and will continue to work with VT and ASTC to negotiate venues for the exhibition.
