KATHERINE CENNAMO (Co-PI)
Katherine S. Cennamo is an Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Technologies at Virginia Tech. She has expertise in the translation of learning theories to the design and development of instructional materials. Her research has focused on the preparation of instructional designers using cognitive apprenticeship and case study methods of instruction. She is co-author of the textbook Real World Instructional Design that incorporate a cognitive apprenticeship method of teaching instructional design, using an iterative design model which she developed based on an analysis of professional instructional design practice. She is also a co-PI on an NSF-ISE planning grant, called Planning Phoebe’s Field in which an interdisciplinary group of students, faculty, and professionals from architecture, engineering, education, and computer science collaborated to design an immersive museum exhibit to teach the scientific concept of fields. In that capacity, Professor Cennamo informed the design of the exhibit to be consistent with current learning theories and examined the design process used within this interdisciplinary group based on the literature on the characteristics of creative groups. She was also formerly a co-PI on Recreating Mathematics Education (RED- #9254939) that examined the techniques teachers use to facilitate student responsibly for learning mathematics.
